We study the effect of localized states by a density functional approach and find electron density and the strip width as a function of the density of states in the gap. Another important effect is electron exchange. By using a model density functional which accounts for negative compressibility of the QH state, we find electron density around the strip. At large exchange, the density profile becomes nonmonotonic, indicating formation of a 1D Wigner crystal at the strip edge. Both effects, localized states and exchange, lead to a substantial increase of the strip width.

A theory is presented for tunneling between compressible regions on the sides of a narrow incompressible Quantum Hall strip. Assuming that electron interactions lead to formation of a Wigner crystal on the edges of the compressible regions, we consider the situation when the non-conservation of electron momentum required for transport is provided, in the absence of disorder, by umklapp scatteri...

Sharp quantum Hall edges: Experimental realizations of edge states without incompressible strips

Experimental results of sharp edge potentials in the quantum Hall (QH) regime of a two-dimensional electron system are presented. First the general QH edge state picture is reviewed, including recent theory which explains the importance of incompressible strips at the sample edge. Then two sharp edge geometries are presented where incompressible strips are predicted to vanish below the scale of...

Microscopic images of the local electron compressibility, electrostatic potential, and current-induced Hall voltage of a twodimensional sheet of electrons in the quantum Hall regime are acquired using a single-electron transistor as a scanned probe. Regions identified as differing in quantum state (Landau level) occupancy of the electrons appear in interrelated ways in all of these properties. ...

The spin-split incompressible edge states within empirical Hartree approximation at intermediately large Hall samples

A self-consistent Thomas-Fermi-Poisson based calculation scheme is used to achieve spin resolved incompressible strips (ISs). The effect of exchange and correlation is incorporated by an empirically induced g factor. A local version of the Ohm’s law describes the imposed fixed current, where the discrepancies of this model are resolved by a relevant spatial averaging process. The longitudinal r...

Theoretical investigation of the electron velocity in quantum Hall bars, in the out of linear response regime

We report on our theoretical investigation of the electron velocity in (narrow) quantum-Hall systems, considering the out-of-linear-response regime. The electrostatic properties of the electron system are obtained by the Thomas-Fermi-Poisson nonlinear screening theory. The electron velocity distribution as a function of the lateral coordinate is obtained from the slope of the screened potential...
